Natural rattan is beautiful but does not survive Thailand’s climate. High humidity alternating with strong sun cracks the strands and encourages mould within a few seasons — which is why most hotels have moved to synthetic.
Synthetic rattan is a polymer strand woven over an aluminium frame. It reproduces the texture and pattern closely but absorbs no water and will not grow mould, and the aluminium frame will not rust beside chlorinated pools or in coastal salt air.
The questions worth asking before buying are the strand grade and the UV protection — these determine whether the colour fades within a year or holds for several.
