Comparison

Chivali chairs vs upholstered banquet chairs — which suits your ballroom

These two are not direct substitutes — they solve different problems. Compared by real use, not appearance.

The real difference is not the shape

People often choose between these on appearance, but the difference that matters in use is this: Chivali chairs are designed not to compete with the event styling, while upholstered banquet chairs are designed for maximum comfort over long sittings.

Once that is clear the choice becomes straightforward — it depends on what kind of events the room mostly hosts.

Choose Chivali when

Your room has a high share of weddings and ceremonial events, which come with heavy styling and where clients often add sashes or covers. The open slatted back lets the styling read clearly instead of being blocked by the chair.

Also when you need a chair that photographs well from every angle — weddings are photographed constantly and the chairs are always in frame.

Choose upholstered banquet chairs when

Your room mainly hosts corporate conferences and long dinners where guests sit for hours. A full seat pad and padded back make a difference guests genuinely feel after the two-hour mark.

For full-day conferences specifically, consider flex-back models — they reduce the fatigue of holding one posture without thickening the cushion to the point where the chair no longer stacks.

What many hotels actually do

Hotels with several function rooms often buy both and allocate by event type — Chivali in the rooms that host weddings, upholstered banquet chairs in the conference rooms.

The upside is a better match to each client’s event, and it becomes a selling point when quoting the room. The caveat is that you need storage and trolleys for both, which should be worked into the purchase plan from the start.

Frequently asked questions

Are Chivali chairs comfortable enough for a three-hour dinner?

Comfortable enough for typical dinner service when fitted with a seat pad. For all-day conferences, upholstered banquet chairs or flex-back models are clearly better suited.

Can chair covers be used with Chivali chairs?

Yes, but they must be cut to the actual chair shape — the slatted back has a specific geometry and generic banquet chair covers will not fit. Tell us the Chivali model when ordering.

Which is more durable?

Durability depends on frame material and handling far more than on chair shape. Both types come with aluminium and steel frames — compare welds, joints, and bumpers rather than silhouette.
