Why natural rattan fails in Thailand
The problem for natural rattan here is not sun alone — it is the alternation between high humidity and strong sun. The strand absorbs water and swells, then dries and contracts. Repeated, this cycle cracks the strand and opens it to mould.
Poolside is harder still, combining humidity with chlorine, and beachfront resorts add salt air that attacks both the strand and any unprotected metal frame.
Synthetic rattan addresses the cause
Synthetic rattan is a polymer strand that absorbs no water, so there is no swell-and-contract cycle to crack it, and it offers nothing for mould to feed on.
Woven over a non-rusting aluminium frame, the whole set resists humidity, chlorine, and salt air — unlike plated steel frames, which begin rusting from within once the coating is scratched.
Strand grade is the question buyers ask least
Two synthetic rattans that look identical can differ several times over in service life. The main variables are the polymer type and the level of UV protection compounded into the strand — not merely applied to the surface.
Strands with surface-only UV protection fade quickly once the surface wears. Strands with UV stabiliser through the body hold colour far longer. Ask explicitly which it is, and request strand samples before committing to volume.
State the real installation conditions when requesting a quote
A set placed in shade and a set in full sun all day should use different grades. Stating the real conditions up front gets you the right specification and avoids overpaying where sun exposure is low.
Tell us the position (poolside, terrace, rooftop, or garden), the sun exposure, the distance from the sea, and whether furniture is brought under cover in rain.
Cushions are a separate question from strand
Even where the strand is weather resistant, cushions are a different material with a shorter service life. Outdoor-grade fabrics drain better than standard upholstery, but they are not fully waterproof.
The practice that extends life most is bringing cushions under cover in heavy rain and overnight during the wet season — much easier if storage is designed close to the area from the start.
